I haven’t read the novel, so my impression is solely based on the animation. It is base on a BL novel so do take note of that. There will be some politics involving these kingdoms going against each other focusing on Beimu trying to conquer the Central Plains. However, it is not difficult to watch or understand. Besides those political aspects, the show mainly focuses on our two male leads, Yan Wushi and Shen Qiao.
Shen Qiao was the leader of this Mount Xuandu Sect. He is a kind and caring person that always believe in doing what is right. However, because of that easy-going nature, he got taken advantage of by someone close to him that caused him to be seriously injured and almost died. He was saved by the sect leader of HuanYue, Yan Wushi.
Yan Wushi’s sect is labeled as an evil sect so you can already imagine him as being someone unscrupulous and doing what he wants. I am not sure how evil he is since we barely see him do a lot of “evil things.” The only thing we can condemn him for was when he betrayed Shen Qiao, but then he saved him afterward. Since he is prideful, he doesn’t like to show his weak side. He doesn’t straightforwardly admit that he cares about Shen Qiao or likes him but his facial expressions and reactions show that he does. I also want to say he takes every opportunity to tease and flirt with Shen Qiao. Shen Qiao and Yan Wushi’s dynamic can be pretty funny at times and can be sweet with how they protect each other. Other times it can be depressing or upsetting too.
Although Shen Qiao keeps getting betrayed by people he thought he could trust, it doesn’t change him or make him want to take revenge on them. He continues wanting to help people in need and doing his best. (Sometimes Yan Wushi acts so shameless or like those spoiled kids wanting Shen Qiao’s attention that Shen Qiao just keep facepalming himself xD)
The first season is free to watch on WeTV official website/App or Tencent Animation official YouTube Channel. Hopefully there is a season 2 on its way, but for those that can’t wait, there is a novel you can check out.
